Litto Gomez of Tabacalera La Flor S.A in the Dominican Republic, has been described by Cigar Aficionado as of the most "innovative minds in the cigar business". Gomez, was a jeweler by trade and only became a cigar maker after losing $400,000 in a robbery on his Miami jewelery store. Gomez went on to buy a 120 acre farm where he grows high quality tobacco for his own cigars, and later acquired a smaller 40 acre farm for the growing of Corojo and Sumatra. His company began by focusing solely on growing binder and filler tobacco, but from 2002 onwards they also started to cultivate a shade grown wrapper and, to satisfy binder and filler production needs, started to grow sun grown and encallado.
